In need of a little guidance and life advice?
I know I am.
I’m in a major soul-searching phase of my life. Maybe it’s because motherhood is around the corner for me (I’m not pregnant!) or because I’m not sure where I’ll be in 5 years career wise or maybe it’s simply because life is complex and I have so many questions about…. everything!
Thankfully, some amazing women shared some helpful guidance with me and I want to share it with you.
Last week I asked a simple question on my Instagram stories, “ What’s one piece of advice you wish you could tell your younger self?”.
The responses were empowering, honest, and you can apply their wisdom to your life right now!
Below are the 19 pieces of wisdom I received followed by a little bit of reflection and input from yours truly.
- You’re Not Meant to Carry This Weight on Your Own.
This bit of advice came with a religious tie in but no matter what religion you believe in, it’s a good reminder that you don’t have to face the world alone. Don’t be afraid to lean on your friends and family when you need them.
- Don’t Worry About Impressing Everyone Around You.
One day this will get easier right? I always try to remind myself that no matter how shitty it might feel when you’re disliked, opinions are not facts. And you can’t pay your bills with them!
- When Dating: Really Have in Mind What Kind of Person You Want in Your Life.
Have you ever heard the saying that you are the reflection of your 5 closest friends? Well, I believe that the person you decide to date (seriously date) can have a BIG impact on your life so make sure you choose wisely.
- .Trust Your Gut and Don’t Let People Make You Feel Less Than.
Only you know what’s really in your heart so you’ve got to learn to trust your gut and do what feels right, even if that means going against popular opinion.
- We Are So Busy Growing Up That We forget They Are Growing Old.
As we work through the challenges of growing up and trying to figure out adulthood, it’s easy to forget that our parents and grandparents are also advancing in their life stages. Try not to get so bogged by your own life that your forget to offer your love and support to others.
- Make More Mistakes, Take More Risks.
You only get this ONE life! Chase your passions, make mistakes, learn and most importantly embrace the journey. There will never come a moment in your life where everything aligns and you no longer have problems so you have to learn to truly embrace the human experience.
- Stop Doubting Yourself – You Are Enough and You Can Do It.
Instead of living in a cloud of negative thoughts, try exploring positive ones. “What if the interviewer loves me and I get the job?” Also try positive morning affirmations to help give you a daily boost of self confidence!
- Don’t Get Pregnant at 15.
I love that someone shared this! The big lesson I pull from this is that sometimes we think we know what’s best even when we really don’t. Be open to learning, growing, and listening to the advice of your loved ones.
- Embrace Your True Self and Show the World Who You Really Are.
Instagram makes it easy for us to create an image in our mind of what our life, body, and relationships should look like. And so many of us fall into the trap of trying to mirror what we see instead of sharing with the world what makes us unique and special. And honestly, that’s what the world needs more of. I want see your one-of-a-kind spirit shine its light everywhere you go!
- It’s Okay to Not Be Okay and Ask for Help.
Strength is a character trait we put on a pedestal but I think we fail to see that strength can also mean vulnerability. It takes strong woman to admit that she needs help and even stronger woman to accept it that help.
- Romanticizing and Jumping Hoops for Your Ex is Not Worth It – It’s Temporary.
Know your worth, girl! I know “love” or romantic feelings can muddle your thoughts and throw you off your game but try to check in with yourself to make sure you’re not making decisions because of insecurities. There are many worse fates than being single!
- Don’t Be a Stubborn Idiot.
Yep, this about sums it up! Learn to get comfortable with the idea that you might actually be wrong sometimes. This will expedite your personal growth.
- Don’t Care What People Think. It’s Ok to Be a Nerd, Not to Have the Latest Fashion, Like What You Like!
Marching to the beat of your own drum will lift a weight off of your shoulders. It takes practice to let go of the value we place on other people’s opinions (I still struggle with this) of us but this is an important to goal to work towards for your mental and emotional well being.
- Just Do It. You’ll Either Succeed and Learn Something or Fail and Learn something, Both are Good.
Failure is a tricky thing to get comfortable with, especially since most of us grew up trying to get gold stickers and positive reinforcements from teachers and parents. Take it from a recovering praise monkey, life is not about always getting it “right”. You learn a hell of lot more from making a mistake, learning from it, and trying a new approach. So own your failures because the road to growth and success is littered with them!
- Embrace Who You Are.
As cheesy as this may sound, life gets easier when you accept yourself as you are. Learn to embrace your quirky hobbies, your body, your personal style, and anything else that make you, you!
- Know Your Worth.
Such a great reminder! I’ve learned that this gets easier as you get older but only if you make an effort to remind yourself of your worth.
- Worry Less About if People Like You, and More About if you Like Yourself.
What if everyone in the world liked you but you didn’t like yourself? You’ve got to live your life in a way that aligns with your core values and beliefs because if you don’t, you’ll end up feeling unfulfilled with your life and it won’t matter how many people like you.
- Don’t Depend on a Guy for Validation.
While we’re out there in the dating world it’s easy to feel like each rejection is a reflection of your value as a person but it’s not. Your beauty, your spirit, your worth is not defined by how appealing a man finds you!
- Don’t be Afraid to Branch Out on Your Own. There’s No “Right” Path in Life, Biz, etc.
I’ve been struggling with this concept since the moment I realized I had to choose a college major. What am I meant to do? What career is the right career? What is the smart choice? To be 100% real with you, I always wonder what would have happened if I chased some of my “silly” passions. On the bright side, it’s never too late right?
