Before you buy better, buy less.
The simplest and most affordable way to start living more sustainably is to slow down your consumption habits a.k.a. buy less!
I wanted to explore a way for you, my lovely readers, to take action without having to spend more of your hard-earned cash. I know that sustainable clothing and products tend to be more expensive (sometimes with good reason!) and many of us are on a budget.
And so, my idea for a No Shop Challenge was born!
This No Shop Challenge is designed to make it easier for you to focus your efforts and work toward a very specific eco-friendly goal without dipping into your budget.
So what are the rules and how does this all work?
I started this challenge in July so that I can hit the 6-month mark at the same time the year ends (I’ll really have something to cheer about during NYE!) but you can start whenever you feel ready!
6 months, 5 months, 1 month, it all makes a difference!
- Don’t buy any new clothing for the rest of the year (or whatever time frame you choose)! Thrifting & clothing swaps are okay but try to control your desire to “have more”
- Decide whether or not to include shoes & accessories in this challenge (personal choice)
- Create a list of “exceptions” because #RealLife but be please be specific. Otherwise, this will turn into a list of excuses for you to shop! Example: I can buy new running shoes if mine tear since I only own 1 pair and I walk/jog multiple times a week
You might be feeling a little intimidated right now but there are few things to keep in mind. One, there are no “shopping police” to write you up for breaking the rules. This is a personal challenge and the only person you have to face each day is yourself!
And two, this is about so much more than clothing. This is about human rights, the future of our planet, and this is about rediscovering your true value outside of the outfits you buy.
There is so much more to you as a person than what you’re wearing and this is a great opportunity to explore that concept because hyper-consumption is often driven by our insecurities and low self-esteem.
