Ready to start a digital book club?!
As the quest for fun things to do at home continues! I wanted to chat about another fun activity you can enjoy from the safety of your couch, digital book clubs!
In this post, I’ll walk you through how to start your own digital book club, how to organize your club calls, and everything else you need to have some good ol’ fashion fun! ( pushed my glasses up the bridge of my nose while I typed that last line – just in case you needed the visual)
Where Did this Idea Come From?
Right before quarantine started my family and friends started to hop on the enneagram hype train. We took the quiz, chatted about our types, and we’re super ready to learn more.
A few weeks ago, my sister in law invites us to join a Enneagram book club and we were more than excited!
How to Start a Digital Book Club in 3 Steps
Step 1 – Find Your Group: Send out a group text to your fav people to see who is interested in participating!
Step 2 – Define Expectations & Guidelines: You don’t need to create any super restricting rules but it is important that everyone understands what they are committing to.
For example, is everyone expected to take notes and prepare answers to certain questions prior to each book club call? Or is it more of a casual discussion with questions being presented for the first time on the call?
You can set up your format in whatever way works best for you but don’t skip this step! It’ll save you a lot of stress and confusion later.
Step 3 – Choose Your Book & Call Schedule: This part is easy peazy! Vote on a book and a schedule that works for everyone! (You can also adjust your schedule as you go)
How to Choose Your First Book
The easiest way to do this is to toss out suggestions and vote on it but if you’re group is not sure what to suggest, below are a few ideas to get you started!
Children of Blood and Bone – A fantasy novel inspired by Nigerian mythology, specifically focusing on the Orisha. Written by Nigerian-American novelist Tomi Adeyemi. (Goodreads)
This book was a hot commodity a few months ago! It’s an entertaining and fast paced read so you won’t dread reading each week!
Stranger in the House – From the New York Times bestselling author of The Couple Next Door, a new thriller featuring a suspicious accident, a wife who can’t account for herself and unsettling questions that threaten to tear a couple apart. (Google Books)
I’m in the middle of this book but it hooked me immediately! It’s an exciting thriller that You won’t want to put down!
Everything We Keep – A luminous debut with unexpected twists, Everything We Keep explores the devastation of loss, the euphoria of finding love again, and the pulse-racing repercussions of discovering the truth about the ones we hold dear and the lengths they will go to protect us. (Goodreads)
This is such a PAGE TURNER! If you’re looking for a dramatic story that reads like a novela, this is perfect!
The Wicked Deep – Hocus Pocus and Practical Magic meets the Salem Witch trials in this haunting story about three sisters on a quest for revenge – and how love may be the only thing powerful enough to stop them. (Google Books)
This is a spooky and fun summer read that will add a little magic to your book club calls!
How to Organize Your Book Club Calls
Below is the format my group uses but we’re pretty flexible with it!
- Catch up! Yes, this is a book club but spend a few minutes catching up – times are tough, connect with each other! Laugh, joke around, swap stories from the week! This will also help the conversation stay focused later on.
- Break down what you read into sections. This can be done by chapter or pages. Then allow each person to give their thoughts on one section at a time. You can also pass if you feel like you don’t have anything to add.
- After everyone shares their thoughts, my group goes through the reading questions and has more of an open discussion.
- Closing thoughts and confirmation of the next call day/time and required reading
Simple Ways to Make Your Book Club Even More Fun
There are a lot of easy ways to add even more fun to your book club! Here are a few ideas:
- Add different drink themes each call (wine, hot chocolate, something bubbly, fresh squeezed juice, etc)
- Change the scenery! Head outside with a blanket for your weekly calls
- Dress up! Make each call a full on event by dressing up
- Start each call by sharing the funnies video/story you saw that week
You’re All Set!
You have everything you need to start your digital book club!
